Jennie is one of the resident body piercers at Industrial Strength in Newtown, Sydney. She was born in Liverpool, England and her family moved over to Australia when she was two and she grew up in Brisbane. Fashion was a big part of her life, she was always making clothes with her friends and they were always talking about what tattoos and piercings they were going to get.

She got into tattoos when she was working in Brisbane for a company called Kwala Skateboards (RIP.) A lot of the guys she skated with had tattoos, her passion started slowly at first. She was pretty chuffed working in Brissy for Kwala, she saved up enough money to pursue her tattoo career and move to Sydney.

How did you find your way to ‘Industrial Strength’ in Newtown?
I got to Syd, I was driving up King Street with my pussy cat, Mork,  in toe to my new home when I went past Industrial Strength and said "I am going to work there".

I have now work with Industrial Strength 7 years, collecting many tattoos along the way. Thanks to my bosses for introducing me to some of Australia's best and for giving me all the free piercings I could want/handle. I love my bosses and the staff that I work with. It really feels like a second family for me.

What inspires you?

Going to art exhibitions, movies, tattoos, piercings and fashion in general. I have been doing a bit of photography myself and would love to one day have an exhibition.

Describe Industrial Strength – body piercing studio?
It is so amazing, I get to meet such a variety of people in my job, never a dull moment. I do most of my work up stairs in the office.

What are your 5 most favourite items?
My Wii, Nikon, skateboard, i-pod, snorkel/flippers.

What do you love most about being the body modification/piercing industry?
That we can all have tattoos/piercings but all look so individual. It has such a character building environment, it shows how everybody grows and changes. And we take our piercings and tattoos with us on our journey through life.

What advice would you give to other aspiring artist out there or anyone wanting to get into the this industry?
It is a hard industry to get into, but if you want something bad enough stick it out and you'll get there in the end.

Who was the last person to make you laugh and why?
My girl crush on this website, sounds silly, but I always check her out. And just then she sent me a message saying how in love with me she was! Awesome.

What are some hobbies you have outside work?
I am right into the new street fighter 4 game, but I really need to get on my skateboard a bit more. I love making beanies and customising t-shirts.

You have some gorgeous tattoo work on yourself, do you have a favourite tattoo artist?
I do have lots of favourite artists. Matt Cunnington from West Side, Josh Roelink, Dean and Bodie from Steel Lotus are so amazing. I would love to one day be tattooed by Grime at Black Claw Tattoo.

Do you have any exhibitions or projects coming up you would like to share with us?
I will keep you posted with my photography, but nothing too exciting in the near future except I am going to start my sleeves soon. =)
