Hats off to Meggs - she’s recently been accepted into Curvy 2009. Way to represent! She’s got more on her plate than a Peter Russell Clarke meal and she’s as modest as they come. She’s also the first MINX ART featured artist to mention Mac Gyver and a cucumber in the same sentence. She needs no further introduction.

So Meggs, tell us a bit about yourself?
I paint, I draw, I cross stitch, I make zines, I do a little bit of street art, I enjoy food and cooking and a wee tipple. I make lotions + potions for a day job, I wouldn’t survive without music, I love Irish music, I have really crazy, violent, and funny dreams,  I’m a ranga, I live in the Inner west in Sydney with an awesome flattie, suburbia and a world only of babies scares the living bejeebas outta me, I’m a twin, I dig boys who wear kilts, I share a great studio space with about 10 other artists, I want to see a lot more of the world, I can be quite the hermit, as a kid I was a tomboy and wanted to marry Peter Russell Clarke, Mac Gyver and a cucumber… hmmm what would Freud say about that?

What inspires you?
Being around creative minds and passionate people. Bad and safe art. Pretentious galleries. Music. Current affairs. Humour.

Can you give us an overview of your work & what you've been up to?
I’ve been involved in a couple of group shows for artists using sewing/thread in a fine art context. Space and money had me limited to small works, then, last year I was fortunate to find a studio space, shared with about 10 artists. It had been a while since I had painted, so was stoked to get back into that.

The latest series (painting in beeswax/oils) is called “The Experiment” and it refers to a social Australian History. My comment is one of the results of what we have become, characters include: Ivan Milat, Chopper, Underbelly, Shapelle Corby, Warwick Capper and David Hicks. I finally put my work online with a Blog page. I’ve also been doing a series of cross stitches on the Queen and working on some street art paste-ups.

Do you like your eggs scrambled or sunny side up?
Depends who’s cookin’

Is there a message or a feeling you try to convey through your work?

I aim for my work to be a social or political comment. I’ve never been a big fan of the in-yer-face, shock tactic approach to political art. I like to take the humorous or larrikin angle, hopefully making the work and message more accessible.

Have you ever been in trouble with the law?
Can’t say I have… possibly an ASIO file though?

What do you do when a vending machine steals your money?
Get much crankier than is really necessary, then I build a bridge.

What is your favourite place on earth?
A small pub in an Irish town, warming the belly on a cold day with a vegie soup, sipping on a pint while a session band is playing.

What makes you cringe?
Rod Stewart, Warwick Capper and the shite on television.

Do you believe in luck?

Aye, luck of the Irish…

Do you have any exhibitions or projects coming up?
I’m off to Berlin and Belfast for a month, it’s pretty much a self funded arts research residency adventure. 2 group shows coming up in July at Gaffa gallery, Surry Hills. The first is ‘For Queen and country’ with 10 artists and their thoughts on her Majesty. The second is a bunch of artists using embroidery or the thread… so  I’ll have some lil’ cross-stitched terrorits in that one.
