Schmooks

Creator of the Schmooks collection, Claire (27) is based in Canberra. She’s an Illustrator and Graphic Designer. From a young age she was always encouraged to be creative and had a strong passion for art. Two years ago she was asked to illustrate a book, it wasn’t until then that she started to take illustrating seriously. It began with cards, creating personalised gifts for friends and family. From there she developed a series of playful artworks, which are now part of her Schmooks collection.
What inspires you?
I am completely enchanted by my little son. His innocence is very inspiring. I sit and watch him talk with teddy bears and send rockets to the moon as he creates fascinating worlds. His imaginary play-land is an inspiration for much of my work.
Can you give MINX ART an overview of your artwork?
Well, I would describe my style as playful, enchanting and quirky. Child-like innocence mixed with a teaspoon of cheekiness make-up the ingredients for each work. I love finding unique patterns and fabrics to use as soft textures in my illustrations. Scanning allows me to incorporate any little treasures that I find.
How did you discover Etsy and create your shop called Schmooks?
I discovered Etsy through a friend. I was looking for a way of marketing my work. Etsy allows me to reach a very wide audience and also connect with other creative people, it’s a great community to be a part of. It took me a day or so to get Schmooks up and running and within a few days I had made my first sale (I was just a little bit excited!)

What have you been procrastinating about lately?
Doing up my studio/working area! I have a very disorganised working-space, I have piles of books, magazines and postage materials. Although it’s where I spend all of my creative time – its just not looking all that creative yet!
Its on my ‘things to do’ list.
Any little tricks to manage your art? Being Mummy and a wife - you’re obviously a busy lady.
Mummy and wife come first, everything else is squeezed nicely around it. My life is somewhat chaotic, but I love being busy.

I have learnt that nothing creative gets done until my little one is tucked into bed. Late nights are the norm for me, and the occasional sleep-in on the weekend is bliss.
Do you have any exhibitions or projects coming up?
I have recently featured in two exhibitions in Canberra and have two more coming up in a few months.
A book I illustrated is being published this year and I hope to begin illustrating my own series of Children’ books. |
