My designs are truly random! I generally start with color, as opposed to a set pattern. Most designers begin the process with a idea of what the piece would be, yet I choose to keep each piece as individual as I possibly can by not having a pre-conceived idea. I have been working from home for the past year, making custom made formal/costume wear. I am endlessly networking, promoting my label through many different online and social mediums.
Is there a message or a feeling you try to convey?
YES! Most definitely! The basic message is FUN! Fashion should not be about labels or conformity. It truly is all about self-expression and having the confidence to wear whatever your heart desires, no matter who you are or what size you are.
How did you discover Etsy and create your shop called AISHAX and TRASHGLAM?
I have been selling online for many many years, and it became obvious at the time that all of my designs were constantly being categorised among mass-produced imported clothing. It was at this time that I visited an online forum to vent my frustration at the realization that most of my ideas being copied (badly!) It was there that Etsy was mentioned, and the rest is history. Aisha X is my personal signature. Trashglam is for those who have a Multiple Personality, in the fashion sense. Baby pink n all things sweet or leather & whips for the ultimate b*tch!
What are 5 of your favourite items?
My Egyptian goddess dress, for its sentimental value. My hand-painted raver pants, each pair is absolutely unique! My belly-dance belts and bras...it's very hard to pick and choose because I truly love every piece I made, as it represents every aspect of my personality.
Did you study or are you self-taught?
A bit of both. I've spent half my life learning from my mother all the tricks of the trade. As I got older, I began to experiment with clothing production and embellishment techniques. Once I reached college, I realised how very one-dimensional the courses were.
Do you have any exhibitions or projects coming up?
In May of this year, my designs have been selected to appear in a charity fashion event in the US. Which means my clothing will get the travel the world instead of me!! lol I have several photo shoots booked for future events, and I am currently working on a few band gig promotions and dancers performing/ modelling my clothes.
In conclusion, it's been a very interesting journey so far, and I will keep on going until I have achieved was I've set out to do...CONQUER THE WORLD!!
